Three ministers from Mohamed Bazoum’s regime have been placed in pretrial detention. This decision was made by the Prosecutor of the Republic following their presentation on Wednesday, September 20, 2023.
Sani Mahamadou Issoufou, Ahmat Jidoud, and Hama Adamou Souley have all been placed in pretrial detention. Under the rule of the ousted President Mohamed Bazoum, the individuals in question held the positions of Minister of Petroleum, Minister of Finance, and Minister of the Interior, respectively.
These three ministers, along with other high-ranking officials from the ousted regime, were arrested in the early hours of the coup d’état. At the moment, the reasons for the charges brought against these senior officials, who were collaborators of Mohamed Bazoum, have not yet been revealed.
It should be noted that the Minister of Petroleum, Sani Mahamadou Issoufou, is the son of former President Mahamadou Issoufou. As the successor to Mohamed Bazoum, he is suspected of being the mastermind behind the coup d’état, an accusation he has denied while calling for the restoration of constitutional order.
Meanwhile, Mohamed Bazoum is still detained by the military and is eagerly awaiting his release. With each passing day, his chances of regaining power diminish. In fact, for many observers, the coup d’état is already a fait accompli. According to those who hold this view, the sole purpose of negotiations with the junta at this time should be the release of Mohamed Bazoum.
