The presidential guard, at the center of an ongoing coup attempt in Niger, dispersed protesters supporting President Mohamed Bazoum in Niamey, the capital of Niger, by firing warning shots, as reported by AFP.
In Niger, the presidential guard, which has been holding President Mohamed Bazoum since Wednesday morning, opened fire on protesters gathered in Niamey to show support for President Bazoum.
At least one protester was injured. It is not clear at this time whether the injury was caused by a bullet or resulted from a fall during the ensuing commotion after the shots were fired.
The protesters were attempting to approach the presidency, where Mohamed Bazoum is being held by the presidential guard when they were dispersed by the warning shots.
Currently, the situation is calm according to our sources. A delegation from ECOWAS, led by the Beninese President Patrice Talon, has been dispatched to Niamey and is in discussion with the mutineers to maintain constitutional order.
