On Saturday, August 19, a delegation from ECOWAS led by the former President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, Abdulsalami Abubakar, accompanied by the President of the ECOWAS Commission, visited President Mohamed Bazoum.
The delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) arrived in Niamey on Saturday, where they were received at the palace by General Abdourahamane Tchiani. According to RFI, the emissaries of the sub-regional organization had come to assess the conditions under which the ousted president is being held.
Mohamed Bazoum lives in the dark, without electricity that has been cut off, as reported by the media. He cannot leave and is “sequestered,” according to his supporters. This delegation had earlier met with members of the junta, including General Tiani. They brought a message: a return to constitutional order in Niger.
The response of the head of the coup plotters is currently unknown. According to a member of the ECOWAS delegation, at the junta’s request, another meeting with former President of Niger, Mahamadou Issoufou, has been scheduled.
