Since the morning of Wednesday, July 26, the President of Niger has been held by mutineers, whose exact numbers are unknown at the moment. This attempted coup d’état is led by General Omar Tchiani, who has been commanding the presidential guard regiment for almost 10 years.

Since 6 a.m., Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum has been held by a faction of the presidential guard, resulting in a “show of discontent” by members of his own presidential guard, which revealed the name of General Omar Tchiani.

According to a source, President Mohamed Bazoum had been considering dismissing General Omar Tchiani, the head of the presidential guard, in recent days, which angered his most loyal men. Tchiani has held this position for 10 years.

According to the latest information, the attempt at communication between President Issoufou and General Tchiani has failed. The use of force against the mutineers seems imminent, but “President Bazoum is not at risk; he is well protected.” General Omar Tchiani, the leader of this probable coup d’état, has remained silent so far.

President Mohamed Bazoum has been in power for two years after his predecessor, Issoufou Mahamadou, completed his two terms. Shortly before Mohamed Bazoum’s swearing-in, Niger faced a previous attempted coup d’état.
