France has expressed its full support for the Conference of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) in its efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger.
In a statement issued from the Quai d’Orsay, the French government affirmed its unwavering support for ECOWAS in its endeavor to restore constitutional order in Niger. French Minister of Foreign Affairs, Catherine Colonna, emphasized this support during a phone conversation with Nigerian Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar. This conversation took place as the situation in Niger remains tense following the attempted coup that led to the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26.
French diplomacy highlighted its commitment to the restoration of stability and the respect for constitutional processes. Minister Catherine Colonna reaffirmed France’s full support for the action taken by ECOWAS to halt the coup attempt and restore constitutional order around President Bazoum.
Concurrently, the two officials discussed the strengthening of bilateral relations between France and Niger. They recalled the visit to Paris by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu during the summit for a new global financial pact last June, underscoring their intent to continue developing these relations in various areas.
As ECOWAS prepares for a potential military intervention to free Nigerien President Mohamed Bazoum, France is joining regional efforts to restore constitutional order in Niger. As negotiations and actions continue, international observers will closely monitor the evolution of the situation in Niger and the impact of coordinated efforts aimed at restoring constitutional normalcy in the country.
