Former MP Abdourahamane Oumarou is demanding the withdrawal of the Pipeline project in Benin. In a Twitter post, the former Nigerien parliamentarian announced his intention to make his next fight the transfer of the Pipeline project to another country in the subregion.
“President Talon will not benefit from Niger’s oil,” Abdourahamane Oumarou attacked in a message posted on Twitter. “After the departure of French occupying forces from our country, we will demand the transfer of our pipeline to Togo or Algeria,” the former MP wrote. There had already been rumors that the coup leaders were considering a Plan B to divert the Pipeline project to another country.
Abdourahamane Oumarou’s reaction came at a time when the junta denounced the military cooperation agreement signed between Benin and Niger in the fight against terrorism. The new Nigerien authorities also accused Benin of “contemplating aggression against Niger.”
Abdourahamane Oumarou’s position is certainly related to Benin’s stance in resolving the Nigerien crisis. The former MP, who sided with the junta, clearly does not agree with Benin’s decision to support and even contribute to ECOWAS actions. But Abdoul Maleck Issa Mohamed disagrees.
“Benin is the best option for us…” Unlike Abdourahamane Oumarou, Abdoul Maleck Issa Mohamed believes that Benin is the best option for the Pipeline project. “This young generation in Niger is unburdened and seeks only its own interest and that of its country. We consider Benin the best option,” he replied in a comment on Abdourahamane Oumarou’s post.
“Keep your diluted patriotism to yourself. The leaders we need today are those who understand the dynamics of modern and unburdened economic policy,” Abdoul Maleck Issa Mohamed added.
What you need to know about the Pipeline project The Pipeline Project is a pipeline transportation system to transport crude oil produced in Niger to the international market through Benin’s territory.
The infrastructure has a total length of 1,980 km, with 675 km in Benin’s territory. “The Beninese section of the pipeline, along with the Nigerien section, will form an integrated pipeline system starting from Niger and crossing Benin’s territory to the coast of Benin in the commune of Sèmè-Kpodji. This system will be used to transport crude oil for its delivery to international markets.”
