Belgium evacuates 130 of its nationals from Niger following the political crisis triggered by the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum. The operation has been praised by the Minister of Foreign Affairs for its effective coordination and crucial role in ensuring the safety of citizens.
In light of escalating tensions and political instability in Niger, Belgium has undertaken an evacuation operation of 130 of its nationals in collaboration with other European Union countries. The announcement was made by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hajda Lahbib, in an official statement. The evacuees were safely transported from Niamey, the capital of Niger, to Libreville, the capital of Gabon, before being repatriated to the Melsbroek Air Base near Brussels.
The crucial role of the departments of national defense, asylum, and migration was highlighted by Minister Lahbib, along with the dedication of personnel from the Belgian embassy in managing this delicate situation. The efficiency of the operation was made possible through the deployment of Belgian Air Force transport aircraft, including an A-400M.
This evacuation raises concerns about the escalation of the political crisis that led to the removal of President Mohamed Bazoum by General Abdourahamane Tiani. While EU countries acted to ensure the safety of their citizens, the situation on the ground remains tense. The previous week, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) activated its intervention force in preparation for a potential military operation aimed at restoring constitutional order in Niger.
