According to information reported by Jeune Afrique on July 26, 2023, a coup d’état is reportedly underway at the Presidency of the Republic of Niger.
As per the information reported and confirmed by Jeune Afrique, at the moment, no access to the Nigerien Presidency is allowed for officials. The phone of the Minister of the Interior is also not responding.
“Early on the morning of Wednesday, July 26, the vicinity of the Nigerien presidency was blocked by elements of the presidential guard. While some sources mention a ‘mood movement,’ others do not hesitate to speak of an ‘attempted coup d’état’ against Mohamed Bazoum,” Jeune Afrique reports.
Around 8:30 AM (local time), calm appeared to have returned to the vicinity of the presidential palace, according to several witnesses on-site. However, the situation remains “confusing,” as indicated by a regional military source, who stated that there have been no reports of gunfire exchanges.
