Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy triggers controversy with the publication of the third volume of his Memoirs, in which he criticizes the supply of weapons to one of the belligerents and advocates for renewed dialogue with Russia.
Nicolas Sarkozy, former President of France, is once again making headlines with the publication of the third volume of his Memoirs titled “Le Temps des combats” (The Time of Struggles). Covering the years 2009, 2010, and 2011, this book takes readers into the heart of his presidency and has already stirred up controversy even before its release. The pages dedicated to Russia have garnered particular attention, accompanied by an extensive interview in Le Figaro magazine on August 16th.
“Strategic Mistake” In his writings, Nicolas Sarkozy questions France’s policy regarding the supply of weapons to one of the belligerents in international conflicts. He openly criticizes this approach, labeling it a strategic mistake.
According to him, wars should not be fought without clarifying the objectives and goals to be achieved. He raises questions about the relevance of unconditionally supporting Ukraine and proposes an alternative: conducting referendums supervised by the international community to resolve territorial conflicts, particularly in Crimea and Donbass.
The former president goes further by expressing that Ukraine should remain neutral rather than joining NATO or the European Union. He calls for a renewal of dialogue with Russian President Vladimir Putin, emphasizing that he has never considered the latter to be irrational during their exchanges.
