On Tuesday, August 1, 2023, Russia successfully thwarted a new Ukrainian drone attack against Moscow and its surrounding region. According to them, an office building in a business district in Moscow, which had already been targeted last weekend, was hit by a drone.
The Russian Ministry of Defense declared on Telegram that an attempted nighttime attack from Kyiv against infrastructure in Moscow and the Moscow region was foiled. Furthermore, Russian electronic warfare equipment neutralized a drone that lost control and crashed in the Moscow City business district area.
According to Sergei Sobyanin, the mayor of the capital, the drone struck the same tower in the City (of Moscow) as the last time. He also reported that a Ukrainian drone attack caused several windows to fall from two buildings in Moscow’s largest business district. “The facade at the 21st floor level was damaged, and the windows were shattered over an area of 150 square meters. There is no information about casualties,” stated the official on Tuesday, adding that emergency services are on-site.
According to TASS, a Russian state-run news source, pieces of the drone have been found and will be examined. However, the Russian Ministry of Defense revealed that the air defense system also destroyed two other drones over the districts of Odintsovo and Narofominsk in the Moscow region.
Since the beginning of the conflict in February 2022, the Russian capital and its surrounding areas, located about 500 kilometers from the Ukrainian border, have rarely been targeted by attacks. However, in recent months, there have been several drone attacks targeting Moscow.
