After the devastating earthquake that struck several major Moroccan cities on September 8th, Morocco has announced an ambitious reconstruction and rehabilitation program with a budget of 12 billion dollars over five years. This initiative aims to lift the country from the tragic repercussions of the natural disaster.
Morocco recently faced a painful ordeal with a 7.0 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale, impacting major cities such as Rabat, Casablanca, Meknes, Fes, Marrakech, Agadir, and Taroudant. The human and material consequences were catastrophic, with a death toll of 2,946, 6,125 injuries, and significant material damage.
In response to this tragedy, Morocco announced an ambitious reconstruction plan during a meeting presided over by King Mohammed VI at the Royal Palace in Rabat. The comprehensive program for the reconstruction and rehabilitation of the areas affected by the Al Haouz earthquake aims to provide a complete and swift response.
06 targeted regions and provinces This program will span over five years and will have a massive budget of 12 billion dollars (120 billion dirhams). It will specifically target the six regions and provinces affected by the earthquake, namely Marrakech, Al Haouz, Chichaoua, Azilal, Taroudant (in the central region), and the Ouarzazate governorate (in the north).
The program’s objectives include the reconstruction of damaged housing, the rehabilitation of destroyed infrastructure, and the promotion of social and economic development in the affected areas. It will also strive to reduce social deficits, especially in the mountainous areas severely impacted by the earthquake.
Morocco’s decision to allocate such a substantial amount for earthquake reconstruction demonstrates its commitment to overcoming this tragedy and assisting the millions of affected individuals. Reconstruction goes beyond just restoring buildings; it aims to revitalize the affected communities and improve their quality of life.
