The organizing committee for Miss Universe has recently released a statement refuting rumors that Saudi Arabia was going to participate in the upcoming beauty pageant. Contrary to expectations, it has been confirmed that the kingdom is not among the countries represented this year.
Just a few days ago, 27-year-old Rumy Al-Qahtani announced on her Instagram account her participation in the 2024 Miss Universe beauty contest. Many people rejoiced after learning the news, as it would mark the first time in history. “I am honored to participate in the Miss Universe International 2024 contest. This is the first participation of Saudi Arabia in Miss Universe,” she had written.
However, this joy will be short-lived. The organizing committee has now issued a denial through a statement. “No selection process has been conducted in Saudi Arabia, and any such claim is false and misleading. The selection of a candidate for Miss Universe is a rigorous process in strict accordance with our policies and guidelines,” the statement says.
The organization, however, acknowledges that there are ongoing discussions for future participation from Saudi Arabia. “We are currently in the midst of a rigorous process of selecting a potential candidate who will be awarded the franchise and the position of national director. Saudi Arabia will not have the opportunity to participate in our prestigious contest until our approval committee has confirmed it,” concludes the statement.
