Théodore Holo has spoken out about the coup that took place in Niger on July 26th. On the show “De Vous à Nous” on Peace Fm, the high-level jurist analyzed the Nigerien crisis.
As a jurist and democracy advocate, Théodore Holo is naturally against forcible takeovers that overturn democratically established powers. According to Théodore Holo, “military personnel are not trained to lead a Republic. They are trained to defend and guarantee the integrity of the territory.”
The military has no legitimacy to position themselves as arbitrators.
Théodore Holo The legal expert believes that no reason can justify a coup against a democratically elected president like Mohamed Bazoum. “Today, people talk about the conditions under which President Bazoum was elected. They say he is there as a puppet manipulated by President Mahamadou Issoufou. I don’t know. But I wouldn’t want our conflicts to be resolved by force,” he stated.
Furthermore, he is not against the involvement of the military in the political life of countries, but under one condition: “When a military officer believes that they have ideas that can advance their country, they should resign from the army, create their own political party, or run for presidential election,” he said.
