Manchester United legend, Rio Ferdinand, believes that the Red Devils should have extended David de Gea’s contract, who left this summer after the end of his contract. Manchester United recruited André Onana as a replacement for the Spanish goalkeeper.
Rio Ferdinand is one of the most respected voices in the world of football. The former central defender still closely follows the situation and news of Manchester United, the club where he built his legend.
A staunch supporter of the Red Devils, the former English international, however, did not appreciate the departure of David de Gea, who left this summer after the end of his contract with Manchester United. According to him, the club’s executives made a decision they might regret in the future. The Camberwell native believes that the Red Devils should have extended the contract of the 32-year-old Spanish goalkeeper, who could still contribute to the team.
“I think they’re going to miss him,” Ferdinand said to TNT Sports. “He’s arguably the best goalkeeper in the world and won the Golden Glove last year. So, I don’t think the goalkeeper who won the Golden Glove would be relieved of his duties at a football club in another era,” the former defender states.
Rio Ferdinand also commented on the arrival of André Onana from Inter Milan. Despite his high-profile arrival at Old Trafford, the Cameroonian goalkeeper has had a difficult start, including conceding a lob from the midfield during a friendly match against RC Lens (3-1) last week. An oversight by the former Ajax goalkeeper that earned him mockery on social media.
“The way the game is played today, wanting the goalkeeper to be involved with the 10 outfield players and be a footballer, explains why we find ourselves in this situation,” the former defender added. This sentiment aligns with that of Gary Neville, who warned the Indomitable Lion about the risks he faces with his performances in front of the demanding English audience.
“In the Premier League, as a Manchester United goalkeeper, you’re under more scrutiny than any other player in English football. I wish him the best because he will need personality and character. All the media, journalists, fans of other clubs. If he makes a mistake, you know what’s going to happen every time,” reacted the fifth-most capped player in the history of the Red Devils.
