In a statement released this Tuesday afternoon, Manchester City announced that their coach Pep Guardiola had to undergo emergency back surgery. He will be absent from the pitch until the September international break.
“Pep Guardiola today underwent routine surgery for a back problem. The Manchester City coach had been suffering from severe back pain for some time and traveled to Barcelona for emergency surgery by Dr. Mireia Illueca. The operation was successful, and Pep will now recover and undergo rehabilitation in Barcelona,” explained the reigning European champion in their publication.
Pep Guardiola will temporarily step away from his duties as Manchester City’s coach. During his absence, assistant manager Juanma Lillo will oversee the first-team training sessions on the field and manage the responsibilities on the sidelines until Pep’s return. The Spanish technician will be back after the upcoming international break.
To recall, Manchester City has started their season in the best possible way. The Manchester club won the UEFA Super Cup against Sevilla and secured two consecutive victories in the Premier League against Burnley and Newcastle. Now, the Citizens will have to maintain their usual discipline to continue this impressive streak in Pep Guardiola’s absence.
