After winning the UEFA Super Cup for the first time in its history on Wednesday, Manchester City will be back on the English Premier League pitches next Saturday. This abnormality has prompted City’s coach, Pep Guardiola, to take a jab at the Premier League during a press conference.
Following Manchester City’s victory on Wednesday in the UEFA Super Cup, secured through a penalty shootout against Sevilla FC after a 1-1 draw, Pep Guardiola expressed reservations during his press conference. He particularly criticized the scheduling of the Premier League, which has kept the match between Manchester City and Newcastle on Saturday. This scheduling allows very little recovery time for the Manchester players.
“From Greece, thank you very much to the Premier League for letting us play on Saturday… and not on Sunday or Monday,” stated the Spanish coach, as reported by RMC Sport. From August 6, the day when City suffered a defeat in the Community Shield against Arsenal, to August 19, they will have participated in four matches within a span of 13 days. In contrast, FC Sevilla, who were City’s opponents in the UEFA Super Cup, will only play again on the following Monday against Alavés in La Liga.
After a successful start in the Premier League with a victory against Burnley (3-0), Manchester City will try to continue their momentum on Saturday by seeking a second consecutive victory against Newcastle. On the other side, the Magpies, who achieved a convincing success against Aston Villa (5-1) in the first round of the English league, will also aim to confirm their good form.
