Internationally renowned Malian singer, Salif Keita, resigns from the National Transition Council (CNT), the legislative body of the transition in Mali. This information was learned on Tuesday morning, at the opening of an extraordinary session of the CNT, which was expected to deliberate on around twenty legislative projects.

Appointed during the initial phase of the transition in 2020, the singer Salif Keïta has resigned from his position. Without providing concrete explanations, the Malian music star, 73 years old, has stepped down from the assembly, which, established by the military in power since 2020, serves as the legislative body of the transition.

“I hereby submit my resignation as a member of the National Transition Council, effective from July 31, 2023, for purely personal reasons. I will always remain the undisputed friend of the military in my country,” Salif Keïta stated in a message read in a public session on August 8.

For the moment, the reasons behind this decision are still unknown, although sources close to the singer mention “personal reasons.” However, some say that he has a busy schedule with several performances outside the country. This resignation is the second of its kind after that of Imam Oumarou Diarra, an influential member of the M5-RFP movement, which played a role in the downfall of the former president, the late IBK. It was after his resignation that Imam Oumarou Diarra was appointed Deputy Minister in charge of humanitarian action. He held this position until early July of this year following a major ministerial reshuffle.
