Mamoutou Touré, also known as Bavieux, has been reelected for another 4-year term as the head of the Malian Football Federation (FEMAFOOT). The outgoing president’s list won with 61 votes in favor, 1 vote against, and one abstention.
The president of the Malian football federation was reelected for a four-year term on Tuesday while he is in detention for alleged financial offenses during his time working at the chamber of deputies. Mamoutou Touré, known as Bavieux, who has been in office since 2019, was reelected in his absence during a general assembly with the votes of 61 out of 63 delegates present, out of a total of 81.
Charged since August 9 Mamoutou Touré was charged and imprisoned on August 9 for “misappropriation of public property” in his former role as financial director of the National Assembly. He was incarcerated at the same time as a former president of the National Assembly, Issaka Sidibé, who held that position from 2014 to 2020 during the presidency of Ibrahim Boubacar Keïta, prior to the junta’s takeover.
Mr. Keïta was overthrown by colonels in August 2020 after months of protests against state bankruptcy and corruption, amidst the backdrop of jihadist spread and multidimensional crisis. On Tuesday, Mamoutou Touré led the only competing list after all other lists were invalidated by the federation. Some delegates left the general assembly in protest against the invalidation of their list.
