According to the statement, ‘the Malian Armed Forces (FAMa) are currently on high alert in sector #3 of Operation Maliko to defend their positions and ensure the peace and security of local populations. The primary mission of the FAMa in this operation is to eliminate the enemy threat, deter any hostile actions, and ensure the protection of civilians.’
In this regard, the Malian army specifies: ‘In recent weeks, our troops have conducted several operations to counter potential threats. Escalation continues in northern Mali between Tuareg separatists and the junta in power. Armed men seized two military camps in Léré on Sunday, September 17, according to two local officials who spoke to Agence France-Presse. A spokesperson for the Coordination of Azawad Movements (CMA), an alliance of separatist groups dominated by the Tuareg, claimed responsibility for the attack. This escalation coincides with a security reconfiguration in the north following the departure of the French anti-jihadist force in 2022 and the ongoing withdrawal of the UN mission (Minusma), both pushed out by the junta.”
