In an effort to mitigate potential risks associated with the presence of the Russian Wagner mercenary group, Lithuania has announced the closure of two out of its six border crossings with Belarus. Lithuanian authorities have made this strategic decision to enhance national security and address the threat posed by this Russian paramilitary group. The border crossings at Sumsko and Tvereciaus were officially closed at midnight, with the planned installation of barriers topped with barbed wire during the day.
The Wagner mercenary group has raised international concerns due to its alleged involvement in various conflicts and unofficial military operations. The closure of these border crossings aims to prevent potentially hazardous infiltration by elements linked to this group, underscoring Lithuania’s priority for national security.
Belarusian authorities criticized this decision, calling it “absurd.” However, Lithuania maintains its position, emphasizing the crucial importance of protecting its borders and population against any potential threats.
