Twenty long years on, the eternal comparison between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo is still relevant. Borussia Dortmund forward Sébastien Haller has also participated in this debate.
Who is the greatest footballer of all time? The answer to this question continues to divide football enthusiasts as opinions differ widely. While over the past 20 years, everyone agrees that Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi stand out from other players, it’s difficult to reach a consensus on who is the better among them.
In an interview with Goal, Borussia Dortmund’s forward Sébastien Haller was asked to make his choice between these two giants of football. The Ivorian striker was actually answering questions about who’s better between Roman Bürki and Edouard Mendy, Sergio Busquets and Neves, Chicharito and Benzema, Insigne and Roberto Firmino.
Without hesitation, the former Ajax player chose the Senegalese goalkeeper over Bürki, Sergio Busquets over Neves, Karim Benzema over Chicharito, and Roberto Firmino over Insigne. When it came to the Messi-Ronaldo duo, the 29-year-old player paused for a long moment before saying:
“Alright… Here we go,” he started, averting his gaze before adding, “Honestly, I have to choose between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Honestly, I have to say Cristiano Ronaldo,” Haller added. This statement will surely not sit well with fans of the seven-time Ballon d’Or winner, who many consider the GOAT, especially after his victory with Argentina in the 2022 World Cup.
