A recently acquired patrol ship from the patrol vessel class by the Ivorian National Navy entered the Vridi Canal before being welcomed on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, at its homeport in the annex base located in the Plateau district.
The military hierarchy organized a welcoming ceremony for the new Oceanic Patrol Vessel (OPV 45′) patrol ship, marked by a “Walter salute,” in the presence of Major General Julien Kouamé, Deputy Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces. “This acquisition once again reflects the commitment of government authorities to strengthen our defense capabilities. (…) The State is providing you with an important vessel that will further contribute to ensuring our maritime sovereignty. Take care of it as you have done with previous acquisitions,” he stated.
The sailors expressed their gratitude to the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, Doumbia Lassina, through Vice Admiral N’Guessan Kouamé Célestin. “This new patrol ship reinforces the initial six acquisitions to ensure security and protect our interests at sea. With its autonomy, our presence on our maritime front will be highly visible to deter those engaging in illicit activities in our waters under jurisdiction,” Vice Admiral N’Guessan affirmed.
It’s worth noting that the Ivory Coast has acquired three high-sea vessels in less than a year: Rear Admiral Fadika, OPV 45 Esperance high-sea patrol vessel, and now another OPV 45 high-sea patrol vessel that will soon be christened.
