For the past few days, residents in some localities in Ivory Coast have been facing a shortage of domestic gas in gas stations and stores.
According to observations made on the ground on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, almost all distribution brands are affected by this shortage. Several young women and men, carrying empty gas cylinders, were seen on the streets looking for places to refill.
Others are crowding around the few remaining gas stations that still have supplies. Some are struggling to get even a single cylinder, while others give up and leave empty-handed.
Prices have increased in a few stores that still have cylinders in stock. As a result, the B6 gas cylinder is being sold for 2300 to 2500 CFA francs instead of 2000 CFA francs. The B12 cylinder, which used to be sold for 5000 CFA francs, is now being sold for 5500 CFA francs or 6500 CFA francs.
Since 9:00 AM, Marie-Paule has been going to neighborhoods and gas stations in hopes of finding the necessary cooking elements. “I woke up very early hoping to get at least one cylinder to cook, but given the situation, I don’t think I’ll get one,” this young woman said.
Like her, those struggling to get butane gas are turning to charcoal as things return to normal. For now, the distribution companies and gas station employees have not yet resolved this shortage.
