The President of Cameroon, Paul Biya, has paid tribute to the late former Ivorian President, Henri Konan Bédié, who passed away in Abidjan on August 1, 2023.
In a letter, the Cameroonian president expressed his sadness at the sudden death of Henri Konan Bédié, the former President of the Republic of Ivory Coast, at the age of 89. Recognizing his contribution to the progress of the country, the Cameroonian head of state conveyed his heartfelt condolences to President Alassane Ouattara, the family of the deceased, and the entire Ivorian population, who have been through considerable difficulties.
“I learned with sadness of the passing of Mr. Henri KONAN BÉDIÉ, the former President of the Republic of Ivory Coast, which occurred in Abidjan on August 1, 2023. I pay tribute to the memory of the statesman, who marked the political life of his country for many years. Indeed, President KONAN BÉDIÉ served as an ambassador, minister, President of the National Assembly, before ascending to the highest office. Furthermore, he led the PDCI-RDA, the historic party of Ivory Coast.
With his passing, your country has lost an eminent and highly influential personality. On this painful occasion, I extend my sincere condolences to you, as well as to his wife, his extended family, the members of his party, and the Ivorian nation. Please accept, Mr. President and Dear Brother, the renewed assurances of my highest consideration,” read the statement.
Born on May 5, 1934, in Daoukro, and deceased on August 1, 2023, in Abidjan, Henri Konan Bédié was an Ivorian leader nicknamed “HKB.” From December 7, 1993, to December 24, 1999, he served as the head of state in Ivory Coast.
