Ivorian comedian Observateur Ebène is currently behind bars, facing defamation charges brought against him by columnist and businesswoman Marie Paule Adjé. This news has led many netizens to dig up a clip from the “C’Midi” show where the artist fearlessly stated the possibility of his imprisonment.
Ivorian comedian Observateur Ebène has been lodged since Monday, April 15, 2024, at the Abidjan Penitentiary Pole (PPA) situated in the municipality of Yopougon, following accusations of insults, defamation, and damage to the honor and image of Ivorian actress, columnist, and businesswoman Marie Paule Adjé. These accusations stem from a comedic segment produced by Observateur Ebène in which he claimed to have had intimate relations with a certain Marie Paule, remarks he later retracted.
It is important to note that this is not the first time the comedian has found himself at the center of controversy due to his controversial statements targeting public figures in Ivory Coast. Up to now, Observateur Ebène did not seem to fear the detention risks related to his provocative statements on social media.
Currently detained at the PPA where he faces up to 5 years and a fine of 20 million, an old statement by Observateur Ebène resurfaced on social media. It was during an episode of the show “C’Midi,” where host Eva Amani asked him: “Are you afraid of prison?” to which the comedian replied without fear.
To the host’s question, the comedian responded: “It’s part of my moment, they can put me there, only it will take off, it’s like nothing. Business is business.”
Moreover, Observateur Ebène’s recent arrest has sparked strong reactions, with many feeling that his incarceration serves as a deserved lesson. According to them, this episode should temper his harsh critiques of celebrities once he is set free.
