The Indian Visa Application Center in Canada recently announced the suspension of its services. This decision comes as diplomatic relations between the two countries are strained following recent statements by Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau.
Last Monday, Justin Trudeau made a statement in the Canadian Parliament, mentioning “credible allegations” regarding India’s involvement in the assassination of Sikh separatist activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Nijjar had been wanted by Indian authorities for several years and was shot dead in June outside the temple he led. These allegations quickly prompted strong diplomatic reactions.
In response to Trudeau’s statements, Canada expelled an Indian diplomat, and India retaliated by expelling a Canadian diplomat shortly thereafter. Tensions continued to escalate as both countries accused each other, with India dismissing the allegations as “absurd” and suggesting it was an attempt to divert Canadian authorities’ attention from the presence of Mr. Nijjar and other wanted suspects on its territory.
In a new development, the Indian Visa Application Center in Canada has announced the temporary suspension of its services. “For operational reasons, starting from September 21, 2023, Indian visa services have been suspended until further notice,” the statement reads.
