At the latest edition of the Grammy Awards, Nigerian singer Burna Boy didn’t take home any trophies. However, he managed to capture the audience’s attention, which earned him a substantial sum of money.
Renowned Nigerian artist Burna Boy did not win any accolades at the 2024 Grammy Awards held in Los Angeles; nevertheless, he captivated the audience with a memorable performance, for which he received an estimated pay cheque of one million dollars, approximately 609 million Francs CFA. This performance also earned him a prestigious place in Billboard’s ranking of the top 100 Grammy Award performances, landing him in the sixth spot.
Among the African nominees at the ceremony were Nigerian talents such as Davido, Ayra Starr, Asake, Olamide, and South African singer Tyla. It was the latter who stood out by winning the award in the category “Best Afro Music Performance” for her hit song “Water.”
Burna Boy, known for his Afro-Beat hits, was highly anticipated at the gala. Despite not receiving an award in 2024 (after winning in 2021), his performance was widely applauded, especially for his stage-sharing moment with renowned artists such as 21 Savage, solidifying the presence of African music on the international stage.
In addition to his remarkable performance at the Grammy Awards, Burna Boy, crowned “African Artist of the Year” at the 2023 Soundcity MVP Awards, collected a considerable amount that further reinforces his status as a forerunner in the African music industry. Billboard, known for its prestigious rankings, has recognized Burna Boy’s sustained impact in promoting the musical diversity of Africa by awarding him a coveted spot among the top ten performances of the evening.
