Beyond respecting one’s sleep rhythm and needs, it’s important to pay attention to one’s diet, especially in the evening, as many people are unaware of the interactions between sleep and food. The way we eat can influence our sleep and alertness.
In the evening, avoid eating too early (to nourish the brain, which is very active during REM sleep) or too late (digestion raises body temperature, which is detrimental to sleep). Ideally, you should eat at least two hours before going to bed. However, if you have dinner too early, have a light snack before bedtime.
If you want to have a peaceful night’s sleep, consider these three foods:
Honey Among the sleep-promoting foods that can combat insomnia, honey is one of them. Eating bread with a bit of honey for an afternoon snack is a good idea.
Dried fruits The same goes for dried fruits, especially nuts. They help us slowly rebuild our melatonin.
Grilled fish or turkey meat For dinner, aim for something light and opt for grilled fish or turkey.
As for beverages, a delicious chamomile tea or a relaxing herbal infusion is a good choice. You can drink it before bedtime.
