Juicy, flavorful, and refreshing, watermelon is an excellent fruit. But choosing the right one is key! Here are all our tips for recognizing and selecting a good watermelon.
Watermelon is one of the most consumed fruits today. However, it’s important to note that when the choice is not made well, you often end up with a watermelon that’s not ripe enough, too sweet, or even tasteless. To avoid these disappointments, experts provide you with tips here to make a better choice.
The Color of the Watermelon One of the very first pieces of advice is to observe the color of the watermelon. A good watermelon typically has stripes or spots of light color. On the surface, in addition to the classic green color, which should be a deep, dark green, there should be green stripes that tend towards creamy yellow. You can also check if the watermelon doesn’t have a large spot that corresponds to the part of the fruit that was in contact with the ground. This is a sign that it had time to ripen and naturally absorb sugar.
If the color of these stripes is too light green or too yellow, it means that the watermelon has not yet reached sufficient ripeness, or it has waited too long.
Rely on the Weight of the Watermelon Hold the watermelon in your hands and judge its weight. A good watermelon will generally be heavy for its size, indicating that it’s juicy and sweet. Avoid those that seem light or too light, as they might lack juice. And if you’re torn between two fruits, always choose the heavier one.
You Should Get a “Dull” Sound How many times have we chosen a watermelon and tried to “tap” it with our fingers! In fact, it’s a good way to determine if the watermelon you’re choosing might be the right one. The sound produced should be dull, full, and muted. If, on the contrary, the sound is weaker, it means that the watermelon is not yet ready to be enjoyed
Look for the Yellow Spot on the Skin A large yellow spot must be present on the bottom side of the watermelon. This spot, called the “sugar spot,” indicates that the watermelon has ripened
