“Berlin calls for ‘sanctions’ from the EU against the perpetrators of the coup in Niger,” said the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday via X (formerly Twitter).
As the chiefs of staff of West African armies discuss a potential military intervention in Niger following the coup led by the military, Germany has expressed its support for initiatives to restore constitutional order in the country. On Thursday, Germany escalated its stance by urging the European Union to impose “sanctions” against the perpetrators of the coup in Niger, a country crucial for supplying uranium to the European continent.
“Germany supports African efforts to resolve the crisis in #Niger. Our goal is to restore constitutional order,” wrote the German Ministry of Foreign Affairs on X (formerly Twitter). The statement continued, “After suspending development and security cooperation, we intend to implement sanctions against the coup leaders within the EU.”
“Germany supports all decisions of ECOWAS” On the same Thursday, August 17, 2023, the Foreign Ministers of Niger, Hassoumi Massoudou, and Germany, Analena Baerbock, had a telephone conversation on the same subject. In a series of tweets, Hassoumi Massoudou revealed that his German counterpart clearly affirmed Germany’s support for the decisions made by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS).
“Germany supports all decisions of ECOWAS and understands the military intervention,” he stated. Thus, “Germany considers President Bazoum as the only legitimate President of Niger. Germany calls for his release and restoration to his functions.”
