General Abdourahamane Tiani, President of the National Council for the Safeguard of the Republic (CNSP) in Niger, made a promise to the nation on Saturday, August 19, 2023, to hand over power to a civilian government within three years.
The president of the CNSP spoke after meeting with a delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) led by former head of state, retired General Abdulsalami Abubakar. According to General Tchiani, the junta would establish a committee within a month to study and draft the country’s new constitution.
Furthermore, the general stated that Niger would defend itself if the need arose, while asserting that the country did not want to enter into war. However, he added that the door to negotiation remained open.
It’s worth noting that ECOWAS has not yet reacted to the junta leader’s speech, but Abdulsalami is expected to inform the regional bloc of the meeting’s outcomes.
