Former President of the Republic of Gabon is placed under house arrest following the coup d’état. This information is provided through a statement from the Transitional and Restoration Committee of Institutions (TRCI) which seized power on the night of Tuesday, August 29 to Wednesday, August 30, 2023.

The Transitional and Restoration Committee of Institutions (TRCI) has informed the national and international community that “Ali Bongo Ondimba is kept under house arrest” and that he is “surrounded by his family and doctors.”

The coup plotters have also announced the arrest of several collaborators of the former president for serious offenses. These include Nourredine Bongo Valentin, Ghyslain Nkoulou, Mohamed Saliou, Abdoul Osséni, Jessy Ela Ekoga, Steve Nzegho Dieko, and Cyriaque Mvourandjiami.

They are accused of “high treason against state institutions, massive embezzlement of public funds, organized international financial misappropriation, forgery of the president’s signature, drug trafficking, and active corruption.” The TRCI stated that an investigation is being conducted by competent authorities to identify the responsible parties so that the culprits can be held accountable for their actions.
