In Niger, the Judicial Police Directorate (DPJ) announced in a statement last weekend the dismantling of a gang of criminals specialized in night thefts, burglary, and group robbery in the city of Niamey.
The gang of criminals specialized in night thefts, burglary, and group robbery was arrested by the Nigerien police and presented to the press and judicial authorities on July 20, 2023. The gang is composed of several delinquents subdivided into three (3) subgroups of six (6) to seven (7) individuals who disperse throughout the city of Niamey at night to carry out their operations.
08 criminals apprehended Eight (08) of the aforementioned criminals, all of them Nigerien nationals, were arrested. These criminals move around in two (2) taxis and motorcycles. Their potential targets are usually poorly secured shops and businesses, which they break into starting from 2 a.m. at night.
They claim to have committed more than ten (10) theft cases in neighborhoods such as Bobiel, Lazaret, Banifandou, Koira-Kano, Niamey 2000, 100 meters, and Dan Gao, and are responsible for the strangulation murder of a security guard at a Bazin sales shop located in the Koira-kano neighborhood.
They have caused damages estimated at 40,883,000 CFA francs, not counting other materials whose value they are unaware of.
As an indication, some of the theft cases are as follows: in the Banifandou neighborhood at a laundry business; in the 100 meters neighborhood involving an amount of 6,000,000 CFA francs; in the Bobiel neighborhood involving Bazins worth 4,000,000 CFA francs; other cases in the Niamey 2000 neighborhood involving electrical equipment worth 4,000,000 CFA francs, a cash amount of 6,000,000 CFA francs, (6) televisions worth 1,150,000 CFA francs, and another sum of 3,000,000 CFA francs; a case of theft of 30 car batteries worth 1,050,000 CFA francs; a case of theft involving an amount of 1,200,000 CFA francs; another case of theft involving a safe containing 7,000,000 CFA francs; a case of theft in a shop in the Dan Gao neighborhood involving an amount of 1,640,000 CFA francs.
Investigations are ongoing to apprehend the other members of the gang and the fleeing receivers of stolen goods.
