FIFA has unveiled its updated ranking of national women’s teams this Friday. At the top of the table, Sweden and Spain lead the way ahead of the USA. The Beninese Amazons maintain their position in the overall ranking.
The draw achieved by the Benin Amazons against Guinea-Bissau (2-2) last July in the first leg of the qualifying round for the women’s football event at the 2024 Paris Olympics will ultimately have no impact on Benin’s position in the FIFA ranking of national women’s teams unveiled this Friday. The Beninese team retains its 145th place in the ranking, 27th in Africa.
Eliminated in the Round of 16 of the 2023 Women’s World Cup, in their first participation in the tournament, the Lionesses of Morocco make a spectacular leap in this latest ranking. The Moroccan team climbs 14 places to reach the 72nd position in the ranking. However, the Moroccan team remains outside the podium in Africa, which is dominated by Nigeria, South Africa, and Cameroon.
Spain Dethrones the United States In the top 10, Spain gains 4 places and rises to the second position (2nd, +4). “The world champions could even have claimed the first place if they hadn’t let slip 35 points by losing heavily (4-0) against Japan in their last group match,” explains FIFA. The first place in the ranking goes to Sweden (1st, +2), which dethrones the United States, relegated to third place. “The Scandinavians dethrone the United States (3rd, -2), whom they eliminated in the Round of 16 before failing in the semifinals and rebounding against Australia in the duel for third place,” details the global football governing body.
Among other movements in the Top 10, there is the progress of the Netherlands (7th, +2) and the drop of Germany (6th, -4) after their first elimination in the group stage in their history. Canada (10th, -3) also pays the price for its premature exit.
