Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed the situation in Niger during a telephone conversation with the President of the Transitional Council of Mali, Assimi Goita. This was reported by the Kremlin’s press service.

“In the course of discussing issues related to stability in West Africa and the Sahel-Saharan region, the parties emphasized the need to address the situation in the Republic of Niger through political and diplomatic means,” the statement said.

During the conversation, the two heads of state also discussed the development of cooperation between the two countries, particularly in economic and humanitarian areas, as reported by the Kremlin’s press service.

“A comprehensive exchange of views took place on practical measures to develop Russo-Malian cooperation in various areas, including trade and the economy, humanitarian issues, and the fight against terrorism,” the statement said.

Additionally, President Putin expressed his condolences for “the terrorist attack that occurred on September 7 in northeastern Mali.” According to information previously cited by the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, 49 civilians and 15 military personnel were killed in terrorist attacks in Mali on September 7. One of the attacks targeted a passenger ship on the Niger River.

The leaders also discussed some multilateral topics. Mr. Goita thanked Mr. Putin for Russia’s support for the lifting of international sanctions against Mali, especially during the recent vote at the United Nations Security Council.

Both heads of state agreed to continue contacts at various levels. The conversation took place at the initiative of Bamako.
