Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed Ali marked Thursday as a momentous day, referring to Ethiopia’s accession to the BRICS economic group (Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa) as a “significant moment.” In a message shared on the X platform (formerly Twitter), Abiy Ahmed expressed his gratitude to BRICS leaders for their support in Ethiopia’s membership in this exclusive group.
“This membership is a significant moment for Ethiopia as BRICS leaders today support us in joining this group,” declared the Prime Minister, underscoring the importance of this new step for his country.
Abiy Ahmed also emphasized Ethiopia’s willingness to collaborate with all BRICS members, as well as other countries, to establish an inclusive and prosperous global order. This membership broadens horizons for cooperation and economic development for Ethiopia and the other newly invited countries.
Earlier on Thursday, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that BRICS leaders had agreed to expand membership by inviting six new countries to join the group, namely Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, and Argentina. This expanded membership will take effect from 2024, opening new avenues for economic cooperation and the consolidation of a new multipolar global order.
The 15th BRICS summit, held in Johannesburg, also highlighted discussions about projects aimed at boosting investments in Africa while strengthening the group’s position in the pursuit of a balanced and inclusive global economic order.
