As the prospect of a military intervention in Niger divides the international community, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Insoumise, issues a stern warning to Emmanuel Macron.

In a statement released on Wednesday, August 16, 2023, Jean-Luc Mélenchon, leader of France Insoumise, expressed his strong disagreement with a potential military intervention in Niger. He criticized what he called “irresponsible amateurism,” urging French President Emmanuel Macron not to engage in a military expedition against the decision of the African Union.

On Saturday, August 12, 2023, Mélenchon had already cautioned about the potential dangers of such an intervention. He mentioned the possibility that it could strengthen military power in Niger and trigger anger directed at France in the region. He also highlighted the risk of similar demands for interventions in other countries facing similar powers. Mélenchon warned against the potential isolation resulting from this decision and advocated for a thoughtful action, taking into account the long-term consequences.

Mélenchon’s position comes as the meeting of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) is scheduled for August 17 and 18 to discuss a military intervention in Niger. However, the African Union’s Peace and Security Council (PSC) has decided to reject the use of force to restore constitutional order in the country. This stance, while definitive, raises questions about the effectiveness and consequences of a potential military action.
