Donald Trump has been indicted on Monday, August 14, in Atlanta, Georgia, by a grand jury for attempting to overturn the outcome of the 2020 presidential election in the US state of Georgia, including pressuring election officials.

This marks the fourth indictment for the former Republican president, who is seeking the White House again in 2024. The Georgia justice system charged former US President Donald Trump and 18 others on Monday, August 14, in Atlanta for their alleged illicit attempts to overturn the result of the 2020 election in this key state.

Fulton County District Attorney Fani Willis invoked an existing Georgia law on racketeering, commonly used against gangs, which carries sentences of five to twenty years in prison. This is the fourth criminal indictment in less than six months for the 77-year-old former president, who is campaigning for the Republican primary in an attempt to regain the White House in 2024.

Donald Trump and his eighteen co-defendants have until August 25 to appear before the Georgia court, according to Fani Willis. The prosecutor, who has been investigating this case since 2021, expressed her intention to have a trial in this case “within six months.”

Upon the announcement of the grand jury’s decision, Donald Trump responded by describing the charges as fabricated. “This looks like a setup,” Trump reacted in a message posted on his social media platform Truth Social. “Why didn’t they indict two and a half years ago? Because they wanted to do it right in the middle of my political campaign. Witch hunt!” he added.
