Niger is facing a period of uncertain political transition following the coup d’état that overthrew elected President Mohamed Bazoum on July 26. The junta, led by General Abdourahamane Tiani, has appointed civilians to key government positions and a military officer as Vice President.
In a move to reorganize the government, General Abdourahamane Tiani, head of the National Council for the Salvation of the Country (CNSP), made key appointments. Mahamane Roufai Laouali, former Deputy Secretary-General of the government, now takes on the role of Secretary-General, while Soumana Boubacar, a teacher-researcher, will serve as President’s Chief of Staff.
These appointments are accompanied by the designation of General Salifou Modi as Vice President of the junta. Former Chief of Staff to Bazoum and ambassador to the United Arab Emirates, General Modi was introduced as such by the Malian military authorities during his visit to the neighboring country.
The political situation in Niger has triggered reactions at the regional level. ECOWAS has decided to impose sanctions on the country in response to the coup d’état and has demanded the junta to release and reinstate President Mohamed Bazoum within seven days. The regional organization has even mentioned the possibility of using force if the demands are not met.
However, General Tiani has refuted accusations of interference and threats from ECOWAS. He has expressed his commitment to creating conditions for a peaceful transition and organizing general elections within a reasonable timeframe. The junta is determined to fight terrorism and ensure stability in the country despite external pressures.
