Tensions between ECOWAS and the Nigerien junta are evident over a month after the coup that ousted former President Mohamed Bazoum. In order to resolve the crisis, the sub-regional organization is suggesting a meeting as a last opportunity with the military junta.
Indeed, ECOWAS wants to give one final chance for peace, as it had been considering a military intervention in Niger to restore constitutional order. To discuss the situation, it has proposed a meeting at a neutral location.
“We have proposed to the leaders of the Nigerien military council to meet us at a neutral location,” stated Abdel-Fatau on Sunday in an interview with the Qatari television channel Al Jazeera. He added, “We haven’t seen any concrete measures from the military, and we will not wait indefinitely for them to be taken.”
As a reminder, President Macron expressed his respect for the profession and his support for the French ambassador still in office after the coup that occurred in Niger at the end of July, despite an ultimatum from the military in power.
