Under the pressure from ECOWAS, the African Union, the EU, and France, the National Council for the Salvation of the Nation (CNSP) can rely on its supporters within the population. This Sunday, they held a strong mobilization throughout the city of Niamey to encourage the coup leaders who overthrew Mohamed Bazoum.
Tit for tat. After Mohamed Bazoum’s supporters clashed last Wednesday, now it’s the pro-coup supporters’ turn to demonstrate their strength. A huge crowd took to the streets of Niamey in support of the CNSP.
The demonstrators also took the opportunity to settle scores with ECOWAS and France, which was clearly visible on the placards. Moreover, Russian flags were prominent and remarkable.
The situation remains uncertain. Even though the military has gained some advantage, the game is not entirely over yet. Pockets of resistance are still present within Mohamed Bazoum’s circles. In fact, he has not resigned yet, posing a significant challenge for the coup leaders who are nonetheless trying to assert their authority.
In a statement issued during the week, the military high command aligned with the coup leaders and warned against any military intervention. They formally asked the military to carry on with their regular duties of securing the country.
On its part, the CNSP held discussions with the administration’s officials, including the secretaries-general of the ministries, to ensure the continuity of public services.
