Coup d’État in Niger: Simone Gbagbo Voices Concerns
The President of the Movement of Capable Generations (MGC), Simone Ehivet Gbagbo, has expressed her concerns about the political situation in Niger in a statement released this Wednesday, August 9, 2023.
Indeed, the President of MGC has expressed her frustration with these sanctions, highlighting that they could impose an unjust hardship on the Nigerien people and further destabilize the West African region. “These sanctions thus appear as a warning against any will of African peoples to fight for their sovereignty,” she said.
Furthermore, Simone Gbagbo has called for a reassessment of relations between France and its former African colonies, including Niger, in a gesture of solidarity with the brotherly people of Niger. This request is also in line with her vision of a dignified, sovereign, and prosperous Africa.
Additionally, she has expressed her support for the withdrawal of French troops from the continent, emphasizing the importance of respecting the sovereignty of African states. “I recall that after centuries of slavery, decades of colonization, and political independence, any attempt at recolonizing contemporary Africa is unacceptable. I declare that the time has come to withdraw all French military forces from the African continent,” she stated.
As a reminder, during an extraordinary summit, Niger faced economic and financial sanctions, which could include military intervention if the ousted president was not restored to power.
