The President of Benin is already present in Abuja for the extraordinary ECOWAS summit on the situation in Niger. He arrived in the Nigerian capital on the evening of Saturday, July 29, 2023.
Designated as the mediator of ECOWAS in the early hours of the coup against Mohamed Bazoum, Patrice Talon has shown a remarkable presence alongside Bola Tinubu. For the special summit to be held on Sunday in Abuja, the Beninese Head of State has been on-site since Saturday evening.
This extraordinary meeting of the member countries of the organization is highly anticipated. Even the coup leaders are attentive and on alert. They have already issued a warning to ECOWAS against any military intervention.
ECOWAS swiftly took the situation into its hands. Unfortunately, their first negotiation attempt did not reach a conclusion. President Patrice Talon, who was announced to go to Niamey, had to turn back.
Currently, the situation remains at a standstill. With the support of the international community, ECOWAS, and the AU, Mohamed Bazoum continues to resist. On the other side, the coup leaders are also unwilling to back down and remain prepared for any eventuality.
