Germany Joins Calls for Diplomatic Solution to Niger Crisis, Announces Sending an Emissary to ECOWAS Summit
Germany is aligning with the calls for a diplomatic resolution to the crisis in Niger, endorsing the efforts of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to restore constitutional order in the country. A special envoy will be dispatched to the summit of West African leaders to contribute to discussions aimed at finding a peaceful resolution.
Germany has expressed its commitment to a diplomatic solution to the ongoing crisis in Niger, supporting the initiatives of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to diplomatically resolve the conflict. On Wednesday, the spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Sebastian Fischer, announced that Germany would send a special envoy to the upcoming ECOWAS summit in Abuja.
During a press conference in Berlin, Fischer emphasized Germany’s support for ECOWAS’s efforts to explore diplomatic solutions and reach a concerted resolution. “Christoph Retzlaff will travel to Abuja as a special representative of our Foreign Minister. He will attend as an observer at the ECOWAS summit tomorrow and will also hold talks on the sidelines,” he stated.
Fischer reiterated Germany’s stance in favor of a return to constitutional order in Niger, criticizing the appointment of Ali Mahamane Lamine Zeine as the transitional prime minister by the military junta. He underscored that respecting the Constitution and democratic procedures was crucial to resolving the crisis legitimately and sustainably.
