All options are being considered for the return to constitutional order in Niger. Following an extraordinary meeting held today in Abuja, the Heads of State of the ECOWAS member countries have made several decisions.
ECOWAS is sending Mahamat Déby as a mediator to Niger. Replacing Benin’s President Patrice Talon, who was initially designated, the Chadian military coup leader and close ally of France is now chosen. Shortly after the extraordinary summit on this Sunday, he set off for Niamey to begin negotiations with the National Council for the Salvation of the Nation (CNSP).
ECOWAS will negotiate with the coup leaders in Niger, but also plans to implement binding measures. A military intervention is even being considered. However, in the meantime, the Organization has already taken economic sanctions.
Sources announce the closure of borders and freezing of the country’s assets at the level of the BCEAO. ECOWAS will not recognize any other signature other than that of Mohamed Bazoum.
