The president of the Iroko Alliance, Bertin Koovi, is against the closure of Benin’s border as a sanction following the recent coup d’état in Niger. In an audio statement, the political figure dissociates himself from the position of Patrice Talon and ECOWAS.
According to Bertin Koovi, the current situation in Niger is leading Benin astray. In his view, Niger would benefit if it attempted to take legal action against Benin and ECOWAS.
In response to the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS, Benin closed its border with Niger and terminated its contract with the Port Autonome de Cotonou. Bertin Koovi sees these actions as misguided decisions by the authorities in Cotonou. He believes that the closure of the border, the termination of contracts at the Port of Cotonou, and the suspension of electricity supply by Nigeria are illegal acts that dangerously compromise regional economic integration.
According to Koovi, it is necessary to condemn the coup d’état in Niger, but it is also essential to condemn the sanctions imposed by ECOWAS. He believes that this should be the position adopted by everyone. He disassociates himself from President Patrice Talon’s stance on the situation in Niger, stating that supporting a president also means telling him the truth, especially when decisions taken may have negative consequences.
Koovi questions whether President Patrice Talon considered the impact on transporters, traders, and transit operators who work between Benin and Niger when closing the border and suspending activities at the Port of Cotonou. He points out that despite being at war with Ukraine, Russia continued to supply gas to the country. He asserts that contracts cannot be terminated by mere political will and argues that both Benin and Nigeria are acting illegally.
In conclusion, the political figure emphasizes that any war initiated by ECOWAS against Niger would be illegal and have serious repercussions for the sub-region. He asks for forgiveness on behalf of Benin to the brotherly people of Niger.
