Benin reaffirmed its unwavering determination in the fight against terrorism on Tuesday, during the celebration of the 63rd anniversary of its independence. On this occasion, the country announced the acquisition of several military equipment pieces that have already contributed to mastering the terrorist threat.

“Defense and security forces standing together against terrorism” is the theme chosen by Benin to celebrate its 63rd independence anniversary on August 1, 2023. This significant event, attended by Nigerian President Bola Tinubu, was the chosen moment for Benin’s authorities to provide more details about the military equipment acquired for the fight against terrorism.

Indeed, Benin has acquired various rolling vehicles and combat aircraft and has intensified partnerships with neighboring countries for coordinated actions against the growing terrorism. Among the countries, Nigeria, Niger, and Burkina Faso can be mentioned.

Aircraft with significant aerial capacity According to information provided by Commander Luc Biobou of the Cotonou Air Base, speaking to the Benin National Television, the Beninese military has acquired five combat aircraft, including 2 H125 and 3 H215, all manufactured by Airbus.

In detail, the H125 aircraft is a versatile utility light single-engine with a spacious cabin that can accommodate up to 5 passengers and has a large fuel tank capacity, enabling non-stop flights from Cotonou to Natitingou with a cruising speed estimated at 225 km/h. This capability provides great mobility for Beninese military operations.

The H215, equipped with two twin-rotor engines, can transport up to 22 passengers. It is equipped with a 4AXE autopilot system that allows the pilot to fly the aircraft with total stability.

The helicopters are also equipped with highly advanced sensors and have proven to be very effective in the field, according to the Beninese military.

Three essential missions… According to Commander Claude Ahounou of the Cotonou Mixed Aviation Squadron, the acquired aircraft are assigned to three main missions. These missions can be summarized as follows: observation, surveillance, and reconnaissance flights; transport missions (VIP transport, troop transport, and medical evacuation); and support missions.
