In the capital city, authorities are waging a war against the illegal occupation of public spaces. After a phase of awareness-raising, a technical team from the City Hall has been enforcing measures since last week.
The Directorate of Technical Services of the Porto-Novo City Hall, along with a team of police officers, has initiated crackdowns against the illegal occupation of public domains. The operation was launched in the 5th district of the city. The section from Independence Square to El-Fateh Hospital and the Ouando market area were cleared during this initial stage.
The Director of Technical Services lamented the lack of civility among the population, which has taken over public spaces after the road improvements. He informed Le Matinal newspaper that the eviction operation followed an awareness campaign.
It is worth noting that a similar operation is underway in the city of Cotonou. What sets the economic city apart is the recurrence of occupants who return to recolonize spaces that were previously cleared.
