After the adoption of a new anti-spying law that strengthens the authorities’ powers, China has accused an official of spying on behalf of the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), according to an official statement released on Monday, August 21.
China is investigating a Chinese national accused of spying for the American Central Intelligence Agency (CIA), said the Chinese Ministry of Public Security on Monday. This 39-year-old individual, whose last name is Hao, worked as an executive in a Chinese ministry after a study stay in Japan, a country where the recruitment for espionage took place, according to the ministry. It was not revealed whether the individual was a woman or a man.
This statement from the Ministry of Public Security comes less than two weeks after the announcement of the discovery of another individual also suspected of spying for the CIA, after being recruited in Italy. The US embassies in Beijing and Tokyo did not immediately respond to Reuters’ requests for comments.
The ministry stated that Hao had come into contact with an official from the US embassy in Tokyo known as “Ted”. According to the statement, Hao subsequently signed a spying agreement, agreeing to assessment and training by the United States. The ministry indicated that upon his return, Hao worked in a Chinese ministry “in accordance with the CIA’s requirements,” and provided information to the CIA while receiving payment from the United States.
