Nigerian President Bola Tinubu has reacted to the Super Falcons’ elimination in the Round of 16 of the Women’s World Cup, defeated by England. The head of state congratulated his ambassadors for their journey in Oceania.
Despite having a great chance to win Africa’s first title in the competition, Nigeria will not go further than the Round of 16 at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Oceania. The Super Falcons were eliminated from the tournament, beaten by England on Monday. Less dangerous in front of the English goal despite their numerical superiority, Coach Randy Marlon Waldrum’s ladies were eventually ejected by the Lionesses in a penalty shootout.
The premature exit has led to some criticism from local fans. Some have targeted the team’s star, Asisat Oshoala, who missed her penalty kick. However, the Super Falcons can count on the support of President Bola Tinubu, who consoled them after the match. In a post on the official social media, the head of state congratulated his team despite their elimination.
“I must salute the efforts of our Super Falcons at the FIFA Women’s World Cup. Your brilliant performance did not go unnoticed despite the final result. You have made Nigeria proud on the world stage,” he wrote. The Nigerian leader also congratulated the D’Tigress, winners of the 2023 Women’s Afrobasket in Rwanda.
